The deteriorated situation in eastern Ukraine was the primary reason why Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, convened an extraordinary session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) at the level of heads of diplomacy on 29 January. The Slovak Republic was represented in the deliberations by Peter Burian, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.

Preparations for the upcoming high-level meeting of the UN Group of Friends of the Security Sector Reform at UN headquarters in New York were the main topic of the meeting between Peter Burian, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, and Dmitry Titov, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions on 28 January.

Today (27 January) the world remembers the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz–Birkenau that was the site of the deaths of the largest number of victims of Jewish origin during World War II. In addition, thousands more persons of Roma ethnicity, persons with physical disabilities and persons belonging to various other vulnerable groups perished in the camp.
