Commemorating the International Day of the United Nations Organization

Today, we commemorate the International Day of the United Nations Organization (UN). On this day in 1945, the Charter of the United Nations came into force thus becoming the backbone of current international relations. The Slovak Republic, as a part of former Czechoslovakia, was among the original signatories and the Slovak-born diplomat and Czechoslovakia's first Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ján Papánek was among the 14 members of the committee drafting its final version. Observing United Nations Day on October 24 is an important annual occasion and time-honored tradition for the United Nations and its Member States across the globe. At this day we are reminded of the universal principles and values of the United Nations and the important work the Organization has been doing for almost seven decades. It is an opportunity to promote awareness of its work and stimulate interest in the UN activities.
