On Saturday June 30, 2012 State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic Peter Burian met Minister of State of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada Diane Ablonczy, who visited Slovak Republic during her tour of four EU countries (Austria, Spain, Netherlands and Slovak Republic).
During the meeting both sides expressed appreciation of the high level of bilateral relations with emphasis on the economic area and expressed interest in their further development. They also stated that there is a potential in increasing the Canadian investments in the Slovak Republic and vice versa. The planned business mission of Slovak companies to Canada in 2013 would be helpful in reaching this goal.
The increase of the quota for young Slovaks within the Youth Mobility Agreement between the Slovak Republic and Canada was also discussed. This agreement allows easier traveling and working in both countries for young people between the age of 18 and 35 for the period of one year.
Other topics of the meeting were the practical issues of consular co-operation, particularly the issue of legal assistance in civil matters. The Canadian side also informed about the changes in the asylum legislation in Canada, which will speed up processing of the asylum claims, and prevent abuse of Canada's asylum system.
