The Council for General Affairs, today, on 24 April 2012, conducted another round of negotiations on EU budget for 2014-2020. The Slovak republic was represented by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Peter Javorčík. From the perspective of Slovakia, the negotiations were crucial since two main European policies of major income for Slovakia were discussed: the Cohesion policy (structural funds) and Common Agricultural Policy. Net contributors called on a significant reduction of the overall amount budget proposal (more than 100 bn. EUR) of which Cohesion policy is to be the most affected. The State Secretary Peter Javorčík together with representatives of other cohesion countries advocated the continuation of a strong cohesion policy with the aim to provide sufficient resources for the development of our regions, infrastructure, cities and communities. As for the agriculture, he underlined the need for faster lowering of disproportions in the level of direct payments between old and new member states and clearly pronounced himself against the limitation of direct payments for large farms. Within an agreement on the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework, to be reached prior to the end of this year, the Slovak Republic attaches great importance to ensuring the best possible conditions for future allocations of EU funds for 2014-2020.
