Vương Đình Huệ, Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Peter Žiga, Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, and State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Lukáš Parízek opened  the Slovak-Vietnamese Trade Forum today (21 September).

The trade forum takes place in the premises of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic in Bratislava and its objective is to showcase the economic potential of the cooperation between the Slovak and Vietnam.  Vietnam is a traditional trade partner for Slovakia in Southeast Asia.  The trade exchange between the countries has increased 30-fold since reopening the Slovak representation abroad in Vietnam in 2008, which reflects the strength of bilateral economic ties.

“Vietnam represents an opportunity for us in terms of economic growth and potential in innovations and applied experience,” said State Secretary Parízek. “The concluded EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement will represent a new historic era in trade relations.“

Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Vương Đình Huệ is the most significant representative of former Vietnamese students in Slovakia. He studied at University of Economics in Bratislava, then he was active in Vietnam in the academic field and high state functions, and since 2016 he has been one of five deputy prime ministers.

In the economy, Slovakia has long been the second biggest trade partner of Vietnam in Central and Eastern Europe. The turnover of bilateral trade as of 2016 has grown by 28,3 percent y/y to €2.85 billion. However, the core objective and the economic interest of Slovakia remains to support Slovak exports, thus helping to balance the high trade deficit.

The steep increase of imports is related to gradual shift of production capacities from South Korea and the People´s Republic of China to Vietnam. These plants produce and export electronic components and devices for companies active in Slovakia - Samsung Galanta and Voderady, as well as Foxconn Nitra. Then the goods are exported from Slovakia to surrounding countries.  FPT Software in the Košice IT Valley represents a new generation of investments and entails a constant exchange of experts.

Within bilateral economic relations, there are joint efforts to actively engage the Slovak companies in Vietnam in building infrastructure, in energy projects, to support supplies in the engineering industry and develop cooperation in science and research, environmental protection and health care.

The Slovak-Vietnamese Trade Forum has been a visible antecedent to the ongoing bilateral talks, which attests to the long-term high level and quality of the relations. Other topics included political and economic relations, investments, nuclear energy, cooperation in information technologies, the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, development cooperation and visa obligations
