Lukáš Parízek Honours Slovaks Living Abroad

On 5 July 2019, Lukáš Parízek, State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, honoured the Day of Slovaks Living Abroad by visiting a symbolic commemoration event held at the foundation stone of the potential Memorial to Slovak Emigration in Janko Kráľ Park in Petržalka, Bratislava.


“Our fellow countrymen are the best diplomats, because their presence and creativity contribute to the spreading of the good name of Slovakia and the advancement of Slovak culture abroad. They do this with zeal and no claim to reward,” said the State Secretary.


Lukáš Parízek emphasized his interest in keeping active contact with expatriate communities abroad during his working visits. He expressed thanked for the activities and contributions made by Slovak compatriots in maintaining Slovak identity, of which they are a firm and integral part.


On 5 of July, the Day of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, which is a national holiday in Slovakia, Slovaks in Slovakia and all over the world commemorate the Day of Slovaks Living Abroad. It is a day celebrated by hundreds of thousands of Slovaks who have lived outside of their home country or the homeland of their ancestors, as a result of various waves of emigration, or owing to the current economic migration.
