Miroslav Lajčák Awarded an Honorary Degree by the University of Mostar

Today (12 September 2019), Miroslav Lajčák, Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs was awarded a doctor honoris causa title by the Rector of the University of Mostar, Professor Zoran Tomić. “I am honoured to receive an honorary degree from the University of Mostar, an important educational institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina that is known all around the world. I value the degree even more because I have strong personal, professional, human and emotional ties to your country, where I worked as the High Representative of the international community,” the head of Slovak diplomacy stated in his acceptance speech. In the following address to the professors and students of the university, he discussed the essence of European integration, using the example of Slovakia’s successful journey to become a member of the EU and NATO. He also talked about the current developments in the European Union. In conclusion, he encouraged the academic audience never to fear making bold decisions that will improve the lives of the citizens of their country and that will bring it closter to EU membership.


Minister Lajčák also met with Dragan Čović, the vice chairman of the House of Peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the chairman of the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina party. The main topic of their talks was the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the context of its aspirations for European integration and possible ways out of the political crisis. “It is in Slovakia’s permanent interest to see Bosnia and Herzegovina as internally stable and capable of executing reforms in order to contribute to overcoming of the challenges faced by not only your country but by the entire region,” Minister Lajčák said. In this context, the two partners also discussed the possible development of the overall situation in the Western Balkans, among other things, also the elections to be held in several countries of the region during this calendar year and the next.
