Repatriation Flight of the Slovak Republic from Tunisia as Another Important Gesture of Solidarity within the EU

15.5.2020 | Repatriácia

The difficult preparation for the repatriation of the citizens of the Slovak Republic and the European Union member states was completed yesterday (14 May 2020) with the arrival of the Slovak Government Flight Service airplane to the Bratislava Airport.  The operation was planned and organized by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Cairo in cooperation with the Slovak Government Flight Service of the Ministry of Interior and the EU Delegation in Tunis.

From Tunis to Slovakia there were 5 Slovak citizens repatriated in total as well as 11 citizens and residents of other EU member states, while 3 Tunisians returned to their home country at the same time.

The repatriation from Tunis was co-financed from the joint European resources with the use of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) that enables EU member states to draw on common European funds in case of emergency.  Since the outbreak of the pandemic caused by the COVID-19, this was the second successful activation of this mechanism.

The realization of the flight from Tunisia serves as another positive example of the close cooperation among the EU member states in the coordinated approach to the repatriation of EU citizens. The Slovak Republic has again shown a responsible and active approach towards the search of common European solutions to overcome the consequences of the crisis situations.
