State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic František Ružička paid a working visit to Riga on 3-4 October 2019. From the Foreign Affairs Ministry he met with Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, as well as Jānis Mažeiks, the Foreign Ministry’s Political Director. The partners discussed bilateral issues, current European developments as well as developments in the wider region.  During the talks the State Secretary pointed to the fact that “Slovakia and Latvia share a range of common interests – whether in the ongoing talks about the new budget of the EU, Brexit and the relations with the United Kingdom, or in the emphasis on the need to maintain the ambitious character of the EU enlargement process.  Both countries realize that it is not enough for the EU to simply react to the current challenges tactically, but rather it must above all make long-term strategic decisions.  Therefore, mutual coordination is of special importance."  The talks positively reiterated the presence of the Slovak contingent in the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) in Latvia.

The talks with Vita Anda Terauda, Chairperson of European Affairs Committee of the Latvian Parliament also attested to the interest in the continuous reinforcement of mutual cooperation including its parliamentary dimension.  “I’m pleased,” stated the State Secretary, “that after last year’s top-level parliamentary contacts, the cooperation at the level of the chairmen of the foreign affairs committees is successfully developing at the moment. I appreciate the recently established Slovak-Latvian Friendship Group at the Latvian Parliament."

During the visit to the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence in Riga, the State Secretary talked with the Director of the Center Jānis Sārts about the opportunity for cooperation in the fight against disinformation: “At the national, as well as the European and Alliance level, it is necessary to build up a sophisticated system of tools so as to provide for the early identification, response and effective prevention in the fight against disinformation, hybrid and cyber threats.  The targeted strategic communication is an essential part of these efforts.” The State Secretary also met with the Slovak expert from the Ministry of Defense, who is active in the Centre of Excellence since April this year.
