On 10 July 2019, František Ružička, State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, met with Matti Maasikas, State Secretary of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition to confirming the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, the meeting was mostly focused on a European agenda.

In connection with the enlargement of the EU, the partners exchanged views on the development of the situation in the Western Balkans region. State Secretary Ružička clearly declared that it is necessary for the EU to adopt a strategic approach. „The development on the international scene and its dynamic character clearly show that the European Union has to have the courage to act strategically and adopt political decisions to foster trustworthy European prospects for the Western Balkans. Such an approach will serve to motivate often difficult and demanding reforms.” That is why Slovakia supports the decision to start accession negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania in October 2019, provided that the necessary conditions are met.

Estonia is one of the world’s digital leaders. Slovakia is interested in effective collaboration – on a bilateral as well as European level – in the process of building and developing a common European market. The partners agreed that it will be necessary to remove existing barriers and implement new technologies faster. If Europe wants to advance more rapidly and strengthen its leading global position in digital economy, it will also have to foster more effective cooperation and knowledge sharing among the EU member states.
