On July 4, 2019, Lukáš Parízek, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic and Special Representative for Slovakia’s Chairmanship in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe received the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic for Non-European Countries, Economic and Development Cooperation, Martin Tlapa.

The key point of the visit by the Czech deputy minister of foreign affairs in Bratislava was to address the heads of diplomatic missions of the Slovak Republic abroad at their meeting at the ministry, in Bratislava. As part of his remarks, Martin Tlapa presented the experience of the Czech Republic in the area of economic diplomacy. In 2014, the country began a principal reform of the official diplomatic missions’ management, which is delivering tangible results in the form of increasing foreign trade exchange. One of the forms of the Czech Republic’s innovative approach is the engagement of local staff in the embassies’ commercial and economic activities. “We get feedback from the business sector, and based on this experience we are trying to make things more efficient. Everything depends on communication,” said Martin Tlapa.

“When trying to improve the baseline for the Slovak entrepreneurs in foreign markets, the Slovak Republic must, in the most comprehensive way possible, respond to new trends.  Development of our economic diplomacy is determined, to a certain extent, by the online space and marketing. I am convinced that the responsible Slovak institutions will continue to make sufficient effort in this direction too,” Lukáš Parízek commented.  The state secretary also added that the Slovak ministry’s budget is much smaller than that of neighbouring countries. When trying to establish ourselves in foreign markets, it is therefore desirable to use the Slovak worldwide network of honorary consuls.

A separate meeting of Lukáš Parízek and Martin Tlapa focused on bilateral cooperation between Slovakia and the Czech Republic, with the emphasis on the dimension of trade and the economy. The partners mainly discussed current trends regarding the strengthening of economic diplomacy and the experience that both ministries have gained.
