The development of bilateral relations and opportunities for the further enhancement of cooperation - these were the themes of a courtesy meeting between Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic and Hans Dahlgren, Minister for EU Affairs in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister of Sweden, which took place on Wednesday (October 9, 2019) in Bratislava. During the meeting, Minister Lajčák also presented the activities of the Slovak Chairmanship in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, emphasizing that “during the nine months of the chairmanship of the Slovak Republic in the OSCE, we have used this opportunity to pursue a set priorities which emphasize conflict prevention, a safer future and efficient multilateralism”.

The discussion also covered the role of the newly formed European Commission in the context of the future of the European Union, and the European perspective on the Western Balkans. Sweden, like Slovakia, belongs to the group of strong supporters of the accession processes. “It is our duty to take an interest in those European nations which are our closest neighbours and are located outside the European Union. The European Union must remain an open project which offers a clear prospect for integration to new members from this part of our continent,” stated the Chief Slovak diplomat.

The two partners also touched upon bilateral topics. Sweden is one of the significant investors in Slovakia. There are 38 Swedish companies in our country, with approximately 3500 employees.
