“A hundred years of friendship has created a strong and lasting tie between Slovakia and Japan, stated Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák at the opening ceremony of the cultural events on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Slovak-Japanese diplomatic relations held at the Dvorana (Courtyard) of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic today (14 January 2020).

Minister Lajčák went on to emphasize that Japan belonged among the first countries to recognize the independent and autonomous Slovak Republic. “In many aspects it endorsed the process of our economic transformation, and it is an important political and economic partner at present as well,” highlighted the head of Slovak diplomacy.

During 2020 several interesting joint events, such as planting of Sakura trees around Slovakia, multiple music concerts, dancing events, an Asian weekend, the screening of Japanese films and various workshops, are planned. The celebrations of the centenary will culminate with the official concert of the Slovak Philharmonic and a Japanese violoncello player in November 2020.
