Due to the current situation, the planned event of the Czech Presidency in the Visegrad Group (V4) did not take place in Prague, but by means of a video conference. Germany is the most important trading partner for the Visegrad 4 region. In addition, it will be taking over the presidency in the Council of the European Union from Croatia on 1 July 2020, at a time when the Union is facing a number of serious challenges. The situation regarding the corona crisis, the economic recovery of the EU Member States, the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2021-2027, and the gradual opening of borders and the return to a functioning Schengen Area were the areas discussed by the leaders this morning.

The joint initiative, presented at the press conference yesterday by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the French President Emmanuel Macron attracted most attention. This initiative outlines what the recovery of the European economy should look like, according to them, including the new so-called Recovery Instrument. The instrument could reach an amount of up to 500 billion euros which the European Commission would borrow on the financial markets and subsequently pump into the economies of the Member States through the European budget. “The question of how to obtain resources for recovery could be, it seems, solved in this way. Now, the second part of the equation needs to be solved, that is, what the money will be used for and under what conditions,” said Prime Minister Igor Matovič.
