“The Slavkov format drew on the common history of the famous battle in Moravia which took place 215 years ago, and in 2015 Slovakia, Austria and the Czech Republic decided to establish a cooperation under this name,” said Ivan Korčok, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic after today’s (May 19, 2020) meeting of the chiefs of diplomacy of the Slavkov format countries. According to Minister Korčok, the importance of this cooperation is growing today when we need to coordinate our steps closely in the effort to overcome the corona crisis. The main topic of the meeting of the three ministers was the coordination of actions to be taken when relaxing the restrictions in the case of border arrangements. “Both the Czech Republic and Austria are considering relaxing the restrictions gradually so that as of June 15 this year it would mean, more or less, a return to the usual practice of the Schengen Area,” added the chief Slovak diplomat. Minister Korčok informed his partners that the Slovak Republic will consider all actions that could lead to the gradual lifting of the restrictions. “Of course, we would still be paying attention to safety and preventing the disease from spreading across borders,” he stressed. The chief of Slovak diplomacy further stated that for the Slovak decision on whether to join in the relaxing of restrictions, it would be most important that Austria and the Czech Republic have similarly strict conditions in place concerning entry from third countries, since citizens of these countries could then get to Slovakia after June 15, 2020.

The next steps of the Slavkov format countries will also be taken with the involvement of Hungary, and it is assumed that the heads of diplomacies of the Slavkov format countries and Hungary will meet at the end of this week or at the beginning of the next week at the latest.
