Bilateral relations, the course of the negotiations concerning the United Kingdom leaving the European Union and timely foreign policy issues were the key topics of today’s (26 September) meeting between the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Korčok, and the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson.

Attention now is focused primarily on the EU-London negotiations concerning the Brexit conditions but nevertheless, the bilateral ties between Slovakia and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are important as well. Our relations are based on thousands of ties, from the large Slovak community living in Great Britain to our fruitful commercial and economic cooperation. Great Britain ranks as the 7th major trade partner of the Slovak Republic and the project of the British Jaguar Land Rover company is one of the largest foreign direct investments in Slovakia. Alongside the strong economic ties there are also historical bonds such as the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia that will be commemorated next year and the invaluable role that Great Britain played in its foundation. “The negotiation of Great Britain’s departure from the European Union can be compared to a divorce. It is painful, unpleasant and costly but still, managing the process in an organized way is in the hands of both parties,” noted State Secretary Korčok at the press conference following the end of the talks.
