They also analyzed the tensions in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. “We are interested in preserving the JCPOA and call upon Iran to adhere to its provisions since it is an important element in regional and global security,” emphasized Minister Lajčák; he also expressed the hope that Germany, France and Great Britain would succeed in achieving a solution such that Teheran does not withdraw from the deal. The head of Slovak diplomacy also drew attention to the importance and irreplaceability of the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the entire process.

The European Parliament elections have shown that the majority of Slovak citizens favours the pro-European tendencies in Slovakia. This is mostly because, for 15 years now, the European Union has been our natural political, economic and cultural space that has provided us with security and prosperity.

Today (10 December 2018) Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, took part in the regular meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) in Brussels. From the political point of view, the most significant discussion at the meeting concerned the current situation in the Sea of Azov regarding the Russian military attack on the Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait, which occurred on November 25 of this year. The ministers condemned the attack, emphasized their full support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and made an appeal for the release of the detained and unlawfully charged Ukrainian seamen and for guarantees for the free passage through the Kerch Strait for all ships. “The incident in the Kerch Strait was a direct consequence of the annexation of Crimea. Slovakia as the upcoming holder of the chairmanship of the OSCE has a strong interest in the achievement of a sustainable peaceful solution which will be based on the Minsk agreements and will respect the territorial integrity of the Ukraine,” stated Minister Lajčák in this regard. They then discussed the situation in detail with the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin, including several EU scenarios to strengthen the economic support for the regions of Eastern Ukraine that are affected most by the conflict.
