    The only, but also the most important point on the agenda of today’s meeting of the EU General Affairs Council (GAC) in Luxembourg was approval of the final version of the guidelines for negotiations on withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union. The extraordinary GAC meeting, at which Slovakia was represented by its Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Miroslav Lajčák, was convened in relation with the withdrawal notification under Article 50 of the Treaty of the European Union by the United Kingdom and as a follow up to a document that includes the European Commission’s draft guidelines. The negotiation guidelines are aimed at defining the framework for the key principles and positions for the European Union’s negotiations with the United Kingdom for its withdrawal from the EU.

    Brexit and the status of EU citizens in the United Kingdom, the EU27’s unity as the fundamental principle in negotiations with London and the future of the EU in a multipolar world were the key themes that resonated today (24 April) during the meeting of Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, and the European Parliament President, Antonio Tajani who is attending the Conference of the Speakers of the EU Parliaments in Bratislava. As the minister emphasized in the discussion, Slovakia and the European Parliamentarian are in the same boat when it comes to the EU’s priorities in the forthcoming negotiations with the United Kingdom, namely the legal status of EU citizens in the British Isles following the departure and financial settlement.

    Brussels (11 April 2017) – Sherpas, the national advisors to the EU-27 prime ministers, met today to give their positions to the guidelines for EU negotiations with the United Kingdom over its departure from the Union. The guidelines present the key negotiating principles for Michel Barnier who will lead the negotiations on behalf of the EU27. State secretary of the diplomacy department, Ivan Korčok, used his time in Brussels to also meet with Barnier, EU Chief Negotiator for Brexit, and explained Slovak ideas and priorities to him.

    The European Union will have a new strategy for Syria and its foundation will be the effort to keep the country’s unity and integrity, bringing the security situations in the country to normality, economic recovery, and a fair arrangement for all relevant actors in the field that will open the opportunity for voluntary and safe return of refugees to their homeland. This was the conclusion from today’s (3 April) deliberations of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) that took place in Luxembourg. The Slovak Republic was represented in the meeting by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák.

    Developments in Ukraine in light of the escalating violence in its south-east, political and security developments in Libya, as well as prospects for developing relations with Egypt as one of the most important partners for the EU in the Middle East were up for discussion Monday (6 February 2017) during the regular EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, attended by Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák.

    Valletta (24 January) – On 23-24 January, an informal meeting of EU ministers and state secretaries was held in the Maltese capital Valletta to openly discuss the Maltese Presidency priorities and the EU of the future. The Slovak Republic was represented by State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Government Proxy for the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU Ivan Korčok.

    State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Lukáš Parízek, represented the Council of the European Union today (20 December) at the 32nd session of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly that is taking place 19-21 December in Nairobi, Kenya. In his address he emphasized the importance and uniqueness of the EU’s partnership with the group of countries from Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific. A single partnership framework joins together more than half of the countries of the world. He emphasized that besides active development assistance the need also is to strengthen political cooperation, including the parliamentary one in areas such as climate change, security, migration and human rights.

    Brussels (12 December) – The meeting of the European foreign affairs ministers (FAC) held in Brussels was dominated by the latest developments in Syria. Slovakia was represented by its Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Miroslav Lajčák. ‘The European Union sees itself mainly as a political player and together we emphasise the need for a negotiated solution,’ said minister Lajčák. ‘Another crucial role is in providing humanitarian aid and making efforts to deliver it where it is needed.’

    Bratislava (7 November) - Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, received a delegation from the European Parliament Former Members Association (EPFMA) in Bratislava today. During their visit the association members inquired about the priorities of the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU and wanted an evaluation of the course of the Presidency so far, and discussed issues related to the future of the European Union, effects of the present crises on European society and the possible implications of Britain’s referendum to leave the EU.

The primary aim of the visit by European parliamentarians was to know how the key actors of Slovak political life see the future development of European integration in the context of the contemporary crises facing the EU, including the implications of the British referendum.

    Brussels (4 October 2016) – The 15th session of the EU-Kazakhstan Cooperation Council was held in Brussels today, chaired by Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic. The Kazakhstan delegation was led by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Erlan A. Idrissov. The meeting was also attended by Jean-Christophe Belliard, Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service. “We had a very good meeting with Minister Idrissov and exchanged views on a wide variety of issues, including sensitive topics talking in a very open and constructive atmosphere,” stated Minister Lajčák.

    Trenčín (9 July) - State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic and the Slovak Government Proxy for the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union Ivan Korčok gave an address at the most prestigious Pohoda Music Festival in Slovakia on Saturday (9 July). During the discussion entitled “Slovakia´s 12 years in the EU: what has EU membership given to and taken from us", he met with Executive Director of the Creative Department agency that designed the Slovakia´s branding Simona Bubánová, founder of the Mladiinfo Slovensko portal Ondrej Mäsiar and musician Martin Valihora. The discussion was moderated by the editor-in-chief of Hospodárske noviny Marcela Šimková.

    Prague (27 June) – Slovakia is ready to organize an informal meeting of foreign ministers of 27 member states of the European Union to discuss the implications of the British referendum for the future of Europe. This was the message in Prague by Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, after the meeting of foreign ministers of the Visegrad Four (V4) countries, Germany and France. “I proposed to organize in Slovakia in the nearest future an informal ministerial meeting to thoroughly evaluate the situation that has arisen in Europe and the next steps and how to respond to it,” stated Minister Lajčák.

For Slovakia, this regular monthly meeting was held in the run-up to the upcoming Presidency in the Council of the European Union.
