Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, held talks with his Swedish departmental counterpart, Margot Wallström, in Bratislava early this evening (14 May). Their bilateral meeting took place before the joint dinner of foreign ministers of the Visegrad Four (V4), three EU member states (Latvia, Romania and Sweden), the high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy, and the EU commissioner for neighbourhood policy and enlargement, that was organized by Minister Lajčák on behalf of the V4 presiding country on the occasion of the ministerial meeting of the V4 with the Eastern Partnership countries in Bratislava on Friday, 15 May.

Minister Wallström, in office since the start of the new Swedish government last October, visited Bratislava for the first time. Minister Lajčák and his Swedish counterpart focused their discussion on bilateral relations as well as on the topic of the Eastern Partnership. Support for the six post-Soviet states east of the EU ranks among the foreign policy priorities of Slovakia as well as Sweden. Both countries have been actively engaged in supporting transformation in the Eastern Partners and their approximation to the European Union.

Minister Lajčák and Minister Wallström also discussed the situation in the Balkans and the issue of immigration across the Mediterranean to the EU. On bilateral topics they touched upon the current cooperation in the science, research and innovation areas. Minister Lajčák also appreciated the cooperation with Sweden within the regional V4 and the Nordic-Baltic cooperation, NB8, formats.
