Support of the further development of bilateral relations between Slovakia and Sweden, exchange of opinions with Swedish counterparts on current foreign policy issues, as well as identifying opportunities for reinforcing economic cooperation between both countries have been atop the agenda during the working visit of State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Ministry of the Slovak Republic Peter Burian to the Kingdom of Sweden (November 27-28, 2013).

The talks at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stockholm predominantly focused on the Eastern Partnership and the Vilnius summit. They also discussed current developments in the Near-East. During the talks, they broached the external EU business policy, the trans-Atlantic trade and investment partnership project, security sector reform and the cooperation of Slovakia and Sweden in development cooperation in third countries – including the cooperation of the country with the International Visegrad Fund. The talks confirmed the closeness of opinions of both sides through the whole specter of topics discussed, bringing Slovakia and Sweden together as natural partners.

The importance of the economic dimension of the visit of the State Secretary was underlined by the talks at the Swedish Trade and Invest Council ´Business Sweden´ in Stockholm and in the Norrbotten Chamber of Commerce in the city of Luleå, where Burian met with representatives of the northern Swedish region. In Luleå, he also visited selected industrial centers and a scientific park. In the north of Sweden, attention was pointed toward the presentation of Slovakia and establishing relevant contacts in order to better use the potential of the economic and scientific and technical cooperation which the Scandinavian country offers.

During his working visit, State Secretary Burian officially opened the Honorary Consulate of the Slovak Republic in Luleå, Sweden. The office, led by Honorary Consul Jonas Lundström, will be active in Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Jämtland regions. This will be the fourth official Slovak representation in Sweden, as well as the Slovak Embassy in Stockholm and Honorary Consulates in Malmö and Göteborg.
