Expert Meeting of the Core Group of Security Sector Reform, 5. 12. 2014On 5 December 2014, the Slovak Republic in her capacity as a co-chair of the United Nations Group of Friends of Security Sector Reform (SSR) hosted an expert-level event in New York.
Opening remarks were delivered by H.E. Mr. František Ružička, the Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations. Mr. Ambassador provided participants with information on the Group’s activities throughout the year 2014 and planned events for the next year as well as on other developments in the field of SSR.
The meeting gave a great opportunity to brief the participants not only about the Alpbach Political Symposium which was held in August, but also on the recent African Forum on SSR in Addis Ababa organized by the African Union, the European Union and the Slovak Republic. Importance of the abovementioned meetings was underlined by the attendance of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Lajčák who highlighted SSR as one of the most important instruments to maintain stability and build peace conflict-affected States.
Participating experts took part in profound discussion when they exchanged the views on shaping and supporting the SSR agenda, especially through convening high-level meeting of the UN Group of Friends on SSR in February 2015 as well as on possible involvement of the SSR in the strategic review process on peacekeeping operations and peacebuilding.
