Bratislava (27 September) – UN peace operations and Slovakia’s engagement in them were discussed by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, in his meeting with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous, in Bratislava on Monday.

Minister Lajčák appreciated the activities and effort by Mr. Ladsous in pursuing the peacekeeping operations agenda within the UN activities. “People all over the world perceive and evaluate the United Nations to a considerable degree through its peacebuilding, peacekeeping and peace-sustaining activities,” stated Minister Lajčák while emphasizing that to Slovakia this is the key pillar of the UN activities and Slovakia is ready to keep actively contributing in this area.

In that regard Minister Lajčák reminded of the importance of security sector reform, an area that Slovakia has been bringing to the forefront within the United Nations. “Developing stabilized societies in post-conflict situations is impossible without reforming the security and justice services, making them functional and subjected to democratic control. In that respect we have already carried out specific activities such as in stabilizing the Central African Republic and recently, at the UN ministerial meeting in New York last week, I declared Slovakia’s preparedness to contribute also to the implementation of the peace agreement in Mali,” emphasized Minister Lajčák.

He also reminded of the €550,000 donation for the Peacebuilding Fund that Slovakia pledged at the donor conference during the UN General Assembly in New York last week.

Lajčák and Ladsous had a detailed discussion also about the role of the UN peacekeeping corps in Cyprus that includes a large contingent of Slovak soldiers.
