Meeting of the Chairs of the six Main Committees of the sixty-ninth session of the General Assembly, 3. 12. 2014
On 3 December 2014, Permanent Representative of Slovakia to the UN and Chair of the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary matters) of the UN GA, Ambassador Frantisek Ruzicka, invited Chairs of the remaining five Main Committees to the Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic to discuss significant issues regarding improvement of general working of the Main Committees. The Chairs recognized, that in spite of the obvious differences between committee-specific issues, some of the areas indisputably require joint effort and common approaches. The key areas include better coordination between Member States, UN Secretariat, Committees, Agencies and other relevant actors, revitalization issues and improvement of working methods, circulation of documents, internal coherence within the bureaus and last but not least, the question of the EU slots. The meeting provided Chairs with a great opportunity to discuss different factors of advanced mechanism and time-efficient functioning of the Main Committees. At the end of the meeting the group of Chairs decided to organize similar meeting in the end of January 2015 timeframe. By this time Chairs shall report on how they see improvement of working methods (e.g. time limits, starting on time, duplication, circulation of documents, side meetings to discuss likely controversial issues etc.), so more concrete form of coordination can be set up.
