Talks of State Secretary Peter Burian with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, 28. 4. 2014

State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Peter Burian held talks with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman on April 28, 2014.
The main topics of the discussion were current political issues with the main focus on assessment of the situation in Ukraine. Development in the east and south of Ukraine is a source of concern to the United Nations. The role of the United Nations, particularly the UN Security Council, is extremely important in this regard. P. Burian emphasized the Slovakia's interest in de-escalation of tensions and need for stability in Ukraine, as a neighboring country. J. Feltman praised the readiness of Slovakia to help with its transition process. In addition, he confirmed that the eminent interest of the UN is de-escalation of violence and a political solution to the crisis within the Geneva Agreement framework.
The partners also exchanged their views on recent developments in Syria, including liquidation of chemical weapons, deteriorating humanitarian situation and the insufficient implementation of UNSC resolution adopted in February.
In the discussion, they also touched the issue of Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities dialogue, where he particularly appreciated the long-term mediation role of the Slovak diplomacy.
