Washington (5 October) - Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, following the announcement of the results of the UN Security Council decision that he heard when he got off the plane late Wednesday night in Washington, said: “First of all, I give my congratulations to Antonio Guterres, the most successful candidate, who has been chosen by the UN Security Council members. Even though Mr. Guterres does not come from the East European regional group that this time was expected to produce the new secretary-general under the unwritten rules, he was continually winning the greatest support in separate voting rounds.

New York (25 September) – More than 50 meetings, statements and events were accomplished during the weeklong working trip to the 71st UN General Assembly in New York by Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic. “The UN GA is an extraordinary week of intensive diplomatic activities, with officials from countries of the whole world meeting at one place. It presents a unique opportunity to manage to hold talks with numerous partners within a relatively short time span and to discuss a wide array of themes concerning bilateral relations as well as timely international issues,” stated Minister Lajčák. During his UN General Assembly stay, Minister Lajčák participated in 12 events dedicated to the migrant crisis, issues of peacebuilding and mediation, to combatting extremism, and the situation in the Middle East.

New York (23 September) – “Violent extremism and xenophobia are in direct conflict with all United Nations principles and present a threat not only to society and individual states but also to the entire international community,” stated Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, at the ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of the Alliance of Civilizations in New York on Friday. The meeting was held on the sideline of the UN General Assembly and was dedicated to the growing xenophobia and intolerance in several regions of the world as a result of ethnic, religious and political conflicts.

Minister Lajčák in New York: Preventive diplomacy and mediation are the most effective instruments for conflict preventionNew York (22 September) – Slovakia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have completed their contractual basis for more intensive trade and investment. Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, and his UAE departmental counterpart, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, signed a bilateral agreement on mutual protection and promotion of investment in New York on Thursday. “The relations between our countries have grown very dynamically in the recent period and signing this agreement creates prerequisites for their further enhancement,” stated Minister Lajčák upon the signing. “This signing has completed the two-year process of preparation of the fundamental economic agreements that will multiply the exchange of goods and investment flows between Slovakia and the United Arab Emirates,” added Minister Lajčák. In that regard he reminded of Slovakia’s lasting interest in cooperation in the area of defence and security, and investment in infrastructure. Minister Lajčák, in his position as an official representing the country now holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, also appreciated the UAE’s interest in developing dialogue and cooperation also with the EU during his talks with Minister Al Nahyan.

New York (21 September) – The need to strengthen human rights and peacebuilding under the auspices of the United Nations was discussed by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, in New York on Wednesday. Minister Lajčák first spoke at the event on human rights and conflict prevention that was organized by Switzerland and Germany, with participation of foreign affairs ministers from several countries and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, on the sideline of the UN General Assembly.

Lajčák in New York: Extending and intensifying international cooperation called for to address migrationNew York (19 September) – In order to cope with migration, extending and intensifying international cooperation is called for – on as broad an international scale as possible. This was said by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák in his address at an event on migrants and refugee issues given at the UN in New York. Minister Lajčák, together Slovak President Andrej Kiska, attended the United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting on addressing large movements of refugees and migrants, which was followed by an address at an accompanying event within a round table on international assistance and cooperation to overcome the impacts of the migration and refugee flows. “The migration crisis is one of the biggest challenges for the international community. This is not a short-term season, nor regional issue – it represents a complex matter for several generations that demands world-wide attention,” highlighted Minister Lajčák in his speech on behalf of the Slovak Republic.

Minister Lajčák speaks at the UN Security Council on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destructionNew York (23 August) – “Proliferation of weapons of mass destruction ranks among the major threats to international peace and security.” This was the message of Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, in his statement during the United Nations Security Council open discussion of the fight against proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, in New York on Tuesday. “The threat presented by these weapons is multiplied by the risk that they may get in the hands of terrorists and non-State actors. For that reason, preventing this from happening should be the key priority for the international community,” emphasized Minister Lajčák.
In order to cover meetings organised in Bratislava during the Slovak presidency (informal Council meetings, the Bratislava summit, etc.) media must follow a two-step procedure.

New York (14 July) – The Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union, as well as the vision on future functioning of the UN were the main topics spoken about by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák at several forums and during a series of bilateral talks during his two-day working visit to New York. Bratislava (28 June) – Migration issues in the context of Slovakia’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union were the core topic at a meeting between Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, and William Lacy Swing, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in Bratislava. “Migration is now perceived as a crisis and a seasonal issue but we have to get ready for this phenomenon that may stay for generations and this has to be reflected in our strategy for how to approach migration,” stated Minister Lajčák, adding that migration is a global challenge where global leadership is needed. “The International Organization for Migration and the United Nations are best fitted for this role,” noted Minister Lajčák.

Bratislava (25 May) - At its Wednesday session in Bratislava, the Government of the Slovak Republic approved the nomination of Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Miroslav Lajčák for the post of UN Secretary-General. This was done in response to the invitation made by President of the UN General Assembly for the member states to nominate candidates with proven leadership and managerial abilities, extensive experience in international relations, and strong diplomatic, communication and multilingual skills for this post.
