23.10.2016 | Slovensko a OSN | Vyhlásenia a stanoviská ministerstva

24 October is annually celebrated by the international community as The United Nations Day, honouring thus the entry into force of the United Nations Charter. Today, the UN Charters celebrates its 71st Birthday  and it still stands as a firm cornerstone of current international relations. Today is an occasion to reflect on the purposes and principles of the United Nations enshrined in the Charter, to review the progress of the international community in their implementation, but above all, it is a Day to honour the invaluable work that this unique Organization performs around the world to solve numerous global challenges.

The main theme of this year`s 71st UN Day is the mplementation of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs)  and the reflection on concrete actions each and every one of us can make for their effective realisation in the name of peace, prosperity and justice on a healthy and safe Planet. The 17 SDGs  along with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change chart the way forward for the international community in the next years. Their implementation requires full solidarity and shared responsibility of all United Nations member states.

The Slovak Republic, since its creation, has been actively contributing to the implementation of the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. Slovakia sees the United Nations as the sole universal Organisation in the world and an irreplaceable forum for member states to seek solutions to multiple global challenges. In this, its role is invaluable and for this reason Slovakia fully supports enhancing the effective multilateralism with the United Nations at its core.
