Minister Lajčák’s remarks on the result of the selection of new UN Security-General

Washington (5 October) - Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, following the announcement of the results of the UN Security Council decision that he heard when he got off the plane late Wednesday night in Washington, said:

“First of all, I give my congratulations to Antonio Guterres, the most successful candidate, who has been chosen by the UN Security Council members.

Even though Mr. Guterres does not come from the East European regional group that this time was expected to produce the new secretary-general under the unwritten rules, he was continually winning the greatest support in separate voting rounds.

I personally feel satisfaction over the highest ranking from among the East European candidates although it is “only” the second position in the general ranking.

This ranking certainly is an unprecedented success in the history of Slovak diplomacy. The dignified participation in the competition for the most important international position in the world has made Slovakia much more visible and Slovak diplomacy has acquired invaluable experience and I am proud of having achieved this result as a candidate from the Slovak Republic.

I immensely appreciate the strong and clear support from Slovakia’s top constitutional officials and all the activities they have undertaken in favor of my candidacy. I thank also all citizens of Slovakia as well as international partners for the support they kept displaying to me throughout the entire process. I was intensively aware of it and I appreciate it very much.

Slovakia conducted a fair, transparent and positive campaign founded on substance and it brought a very good outcome that is a success for our entire country. The credit for this success also goes to a professional team of Slovak diplomats whose hard and relentless work made this kind of finale possible; in this way I would like to express my sincere thanks to them all.”

Minister Lajčák will give a press conference on his candidacy for the UN Secretary-General position after his arrival from the Washington business trip on Friday at 11:30 in the MFEA SR premises.
