Bratislava (12th April) - The highest representatives of Slovakia expressed their sympathies to Poland mourning the tragedy of the plane of the Polish President in the Russian city of Smolensk from Saturday. The messages of condolence have been sent by the Head of State, the Speaker of the Parliament, Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defence, National Bank governor and others to their respective partners in Poland. Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajčák contacted his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski immediately after he received the news about the plane crash and expressed his sincere, profound condolences. „This huge tragedy has affected all of us. I want to reassure you that Slovakia as a neighbour and good friend stands by the Polish nation in this sad moment and we will do everything we can to help to alleviate the pain inflicted by this horrific event,“ Mr Lajčák said on Saturday. The Slovak government will on Wednesday decide to declare the Day of State Mourning in Slovakia for the date of the funeral of the victims.

The memory of the victims has been honoured already on Monday with one minute of silence at the beginning of the Annual Conference on the Foreign Policy, held in presence of the President, Prime Minister and Speaker of the Parliament at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.
