State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Marek Eštok, addressed the 55th session of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council in Geneva today (28 February 2024), attended by more than a hundred representatives of states and international organisations. The State Secretary also addressed the Conference on Disarmament, held on the same day at the UN Headquarters in Switzerland. This was the first time in five years that a high-ranking official representing Slovakia had attended both meetings in person.

In commemoration of Human Rights Day on 10 December 2023, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Juraj Blanár stated that it is the collective duty of society world-wide to promote the human rights of every person in the world.

The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Wlachovský, attended a commemorative event in Sobibor, a former Nazi extermination camp in Poland on 12 October 2023.

On 2 October 2023 State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Peter Mišík thanked the members of the election observation commission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

82 years ago, on 9 September 1941, the so called Jewish Code came into force in the wartime Slovak Republic. The regulation of the then people's regime was one of the most cruel anti-Jewish laws in Europe. The ninth of September is therefore annually commemorated as Memorial Day for Victims of the Holocaust and Racial Violence throughout Slovakia.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ingrid Brocková, participated in the commemorative event dedicated to the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day in Banská Bystrica on 2 August 2023. The State Secretary laid a wreath at the memorial to the victims of the Roma Holocaust on the grounds of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising.

On 30 June 2023 - the day of the 30th anniversary of Slovakia's accession to the Council of Europe, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Wlachovský, highlighted the contribution of this international organization of European states to the democratisation of Eastern Europe after the fall of the Iron Curtain. He described the Council of Europe's assistance to Slovakia on the road to European integration as indispensable.

On 24 June, the Slovak Republic commemorates the Day of Remembrance and Respect to Victims of the Communist Regime - all those wrongly convicted and imprisoned between 1948 and 1989. On this date, 24 June 1954, a doctor, political prisoner and Catholic dissident Silvester Krčméry was unjustly convicted of alleged treason, after being tortured.

On 30 May 2023, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ingrid Brocková, held talks with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić and the Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Mateo Mecacci in Bratislava.

Victory over fascism was a prerequisite for the democratic development of Europe. Without it, it would have been impossible to build our future on the principles of human rights, freedom of the individual, and justice.
