Bratislava, 16 May 2024 - The horrific and unjustifiable assassination attempt on the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, as well as on Slovak democracy, which took place following yesterday's Cabinet meeting in Handlová, has triggered a massive wave of empathy and solidarity from more than 200 leaders from around the world, as well as from prominent international organisations.

Bratislava 15.5.2024 – Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Juraj Blanár informs that the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico was the target of an assassination which took place shortly after a cabinet meeting in the city of Handlová. The assailant hit the Prime Minister with several shots at close range. The Prime Minister was transported to a hospital in Banská Bystrica in critical condition.

105 years ago, in Ivánka pri Dunaji, the diplomat, scientist, statesman, soldier and politician Milan Rastislav Štefánik died in a plane crash. A man who devoted his life to the fight for freedom and whose firm belief in the future did not abandon him even in times of uncertainty.

On 2 May 2024, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Slovakia's accession to the European Union, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, organised an international conference on the benefits, challenges and future of the EU and Slovakia as an active member. Slovak and foreign political representatives, experts on European policies, economics, investments, and representatives of chambers of commerce, addressed the importance and opportunities of the grouping of 27 European countries in three discussion panels.
