Study in Slovakia

Today (25 October 2018), Miroslav Lajčák, Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, attended roundtable discussions of the World Investment Forum of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. The focal point of this year’s event is “investment into sustainable development”. Minister Lajčák informed the partners about his activities in the position as chairman of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, which focused on the creation of practical tools to support the funding of sustainable goals. With regard to this issue, he made the point that this is a much more urgent task now than ever before. In spite of the fact that the adoption of Agenda 2030 was evidently a progressive step in the process of financing sustainable development goals, the overall extent of these goals is not yet sufficient. “Last year was one of the hottest years in history – oceans are rising, people suffer from starvation. In 2016, we recorded 40 million people in the world who are undernourished,” said the chief of Slovak diplomacy about this problem, adding that the situation is worsened by diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis. Developing countries have an investment gap of about 2.5 trillion American dollars every year. Therefore, funding sustainable development goals is an issue of vital importance – a problem that should be addressed by all responsible players in the world.
