The issue of sustainable peace requires adoption of a long-term strategy, with emphasis on prevention, on the platform of the United Nations. It is obvious that UN activities must have a broader reach than just addressing the immediate needs of conflict-stricken countries. We need a peace-building and peace-keeping strategy. This was said today (20 July) by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, at a daylong coordination event (the so-called retreat) for experience sharing between sessions of the UN General Assembly in New York. Under this traditional activity that has occurred for six years, the current and the next presidents of the UN General Assembly meet jointly with their vice-presidents and chairpersons of the main committees to evaluate the UN’s dynamics, reflect on processes within the organization and set specific priorities for the future.
