World and European Day against the Death Penalty

10.10.2014 | Ľudské práva

10 October is World and European Day against the death penalty. Its universal abolition is one of the key objectives of the EU human rights policy. The Slovak Republic reiterates its principled and clear opposition to the death penalty. We oppose to its use in all cases and under any circumstances. Capital punishment has no place in today’s society. The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic supports endeavours of the international community towards its universal abolition. In this regard we also pay tribute to human rights defenders and NGOs whose activities make an integral part of the fight against the death penalty. The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic believes that the resolution on a moratorium on the use of the death penalty which will be adopted by the UN General Assembly later this year will confirm global trend towards its abolition.
