As one of the first foreign political officials, Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic and Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), met today (September 13, 2019), in Kiev, with Ukrainian high constitutional dignitaries – Dmytro Razumkov, Speaker of the Parliament, and Vadym Prystaiko, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The partners discussed the current internal political situation in Ukraine in the context of the newest developments regarding the conflict in Donbas. Miroslav Lajčák highlighted the recent exchange of detainees between Ukraine and Russia, which had been one of the goals of the OSCE, and the positive approach that Ukraine has shown during difficult negotiations. The Chief Slovak diplomat also appreciated that the Station Luhansk has been demined and the troops have been withdrawn from the area. He further emphasized that is necessary to start, as soon as possible, with the reconstruction of the bridge, which is the only place in the Luhansk area where it is possible to cross from the separatist-occupied territory to Ukraine and back. “It would be a significant step forward in the humanitarian context and towards better conditions for the local population,” stated Miroslav Lajčák.

The partners also talked about Slovak and Ukrainian relations and the possibilities of their further enhancement. “Slovakia will continue to support the reform and transformation processes in Ukraine,” stated Minister Lajčák. He encouraged the Ukrainian partners in this context by saying that the reform endeavours of the new political leadership of the country should be demonstrated by creating better living conditions for the citizens of Ukraine. He also underscored that the position of the Slovak Republic concerning the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine remains unchanged.

Miroslav Lajčák also met today with the Head of the OSCE Special Observation Mission Halit Çevik and with the Slovak monitors in this mission whom he thanked for their efforts and responsible work, the aim of which is to restore peace in Ukraine.
