The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic (MFEA SR) welcomes the nomination of Peter Burian, State Secretary of MFEA SR, as the EU Special Representative for Central Asia nominated by Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.

The nomination, which has been approved by all European Union member states, reflects recognition of the highly professional qualities and diplomatic experience of Peter Burian. At the same time, in the context of strong candidates from other member states, the nomination also attests to the prominent reputation of Slovak diplomacy in this region as well as globally. Two Slovak diplomats had already served as EU Special Representatives (Miroslav Lajčák for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ján Kubiš for Central Asia).

State Secretary Burian will assume his new office after formal approval of the decision by the EU Council. This is the third nomination of a Slovak diplomat to a high international office within a short time span.
