State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Lukáš Parízek, received today (15 March 2018) Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, in Bratislava. They discussed current issues of protecting and promoting human rights in the Slovak Republic, as well as in a wider European context. They also delved into the position of women, the Roma minority and that of mentally or physically disabled persons in the society.  The working visit paid by the Commissioner is a follow-up to his visit to Slovakia in June 2015 to evaluate the current state of play in human rights in the Slovak Republic and the progress achieved since his last visit.

State Secretary Parízek appreciated the activities of Commissioner Muižnieks at this important function in the structure of the European human right system architecture. He emphasized the permanent interest of Slovakia to continue in good relations and dialogue with the Council of Europe, as well as with the future Commissioner Mijatovič, especially since 2018 is when we commemorate the 25th anniversary of Slovakia joining this oldest pan-European organization.

As the Special Representative of the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic for the Slovakia´s OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe) Chairmanship, he emphasized that Slovakia pays great attention to human rights when setting its political priorities.  "The Slovak Republic will appreciate closer cooperation with the Office of the Commissioner of Council of Europe for Human Rights.  We consider identifying possibilities of synergies and interconnections of agendas of both organizations to be important, also within Slovakia´s OSCE Chairmanship in 2019," stated Parízek.

Commissioner Muižnieks is visiting Slovakia together with Dunja Mijatovič, who was elected his successor by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), and will assume her mandate as of 1 April 2018. The delegation will also meet with their partners from the Ministries of Justice, Education, Science, Research and Sport, as well as with representatives of the Government´s Proxy for Roma communities, as well as with Ombudswoman Mária Patakyová.
