Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic received today (February 19, 2020) Roger Frederick Wicker in Bratislava. At the meeting with the member of the American Senate and the Republican Party, the partners focused particularly on transatlantic relations and emphasized their strategic importance.

Minister Lajčák also used the meeting to evaluate the Slovak chairmanship in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), given that Senator Wicker is the Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. “We also touched upon our cooperation in the area of trade, since my American partner also serves as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce,” added Miroslav Lajčák. The chief of the Slovak diplomatic service also pointed to the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation and its significance in terms of values and in the context of collaboration in international organisations; this was reflected specifically during the recent Slovak OSCE chairmanship. “I also acknowledged the work of the Helsinki Commission of the US Congress, which significantly contributes to the protection of human rights in the OSCE participating states and serves as an important reflection for every responsible government,” the chief Slovak diplomat added.

During the meeting, the partners also discussed other current issues concerning the mutual relations of the two countries, particularly in the area of trade and security. “Only through dialogue and the regular exchange of information can we find solutions to these issues, both at the bilateral and the multilateral levels,” concluded Miroslav Lajčák.
