The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs summons the Russian Ambassador

7.3.2019

Today (7 March), the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic summoned Alexey Fedotov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in connection with the open letter published on the official site of the social network of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Slovakia. During the meeting, Marián Jakubócy, Political Director of the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry, stated that the cooperation between the Slovak Republic and the Russian Federation is based on the principle of partnership, sovereignty and mutual respect. He further stated that Slovakia wishes to develop, in this spirit, fair relations with the Russian Federation. He emphasized, however, that it is inadmissible that the embassy publicly commented on and assessed an official of the receiving country, in this case the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic. Concerning the diplomatic note which the Russian Embassy used to react to an article by the State Secretary of the Slovak Defence Ministry Róbert Ondrejcsák, published in the SME daily, Marián Jakubóczy stated that the opinions and standpoints presented were not an interpretation of official positions of the Slovak government. He noted, in this context, that in terms of the protection of the security interests of the Slovak Republic, it is deeply disturbing to see a violation of the fundamental principles of international law with the annexation of a part of Ukrainian territory by the Russian Federation based on an illegitimate and illegal referendum held in Crimea and Sevastopol. He confirmed that the Slovak Republic fully and consistently respects the principle of the inalterability of state borders and respect for international law and, in this context, supports the sovereignty of Ukraine and its territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr Jakubóczy passed to Ambassador Fedotov a diplomatic note on this matter.
