Measures to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 in the Slovak Republic

Due to the public health emergency and the need to adopt measures pursuant to the law on the civil protection of the population, on 11 March 2020 the Slovak Republic declared a state of emergency in the territory of the Slovak Republic.

On 12 March 2020 the Central Emergency Staff of the Slovak Republic adopted the following measures in relation to the COVID-19 disease:

- All three international airports will be closed down
- People with a permanent or temporary domicile in the Slovak Republic who return to Slovakia from abroad will be obliged to remain in quarantine for 14 days
- All schools and educational establishments will be shut down
- Health and police measures will be imposed at the borders of the Slovak Republic with Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic to prevent, or significantly limit the possibility of, the spread of the virus

- International and domestic train and bus transport will be limited, except for imports and supplies

- Bars, leisure facilities and premises (ski centers, wellness centers, fitness centers, amusement parks and aquaparks) will be closed
- Social and cultural establishments will be shut down
- Shopping centers will have limited operation – on the weekend, only food, medications and drugstore items may be bought 
- The opening hours of customer centers will be limited
- Visits of the hospital patients will continue to be prohibited
- The organization of sporting, cultural, social and other mass events is prohibited
- Hotels and restaurants will be open.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic emphasizes that the measures represent a major and important tool to limit the spread of the COVID-19 in the Slovak Republic. 


In this context the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs recommends against travelling abroad as long as the state of emergency in the territory of the Slovak Republic remains in force.


We stress that beginning on 13 March 2020 7.00 a.m. all the persons coming to Slovakia from abroad are obliged to remain in quarantine for 14 days. More information is available at the website of the Public Health Office of the Slovak Republic (

In relation to the transport restrictions, beginning on 13 March 7.00 a.m. the Ministry of Transport and Construction of the Slovak Republic imposes increased measures for international transport.
Railway Transport
International trains will not operate as of 13 March 7.00 a.m. Domestic rail passenger transport will operate according to Saturday timetables every day as of the Saturday 14 March 2020. The ZSSK (Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko, Slovak Passenger Railways Company) continues to regularly disinfect train cars. Similarly, the ŽSR (Železnice Slovenskej republiky, Railways of the Slovak Republic) disinfects the premises of the railway stations.


Bus Transport
Likewise, international bus transport is not allowed to operate from or to Slovakia as of 13 March 7.00 a.m.


Truck Transport of Goods
Freight transport is permitted for domestic as well as international routes to provide for supplying services. Truck drivers must be equipped with protective equipment.


Maritime Transport
Passenger cruise vessels are not allowed to enter a harbor in Slovakia as of 13 March 7.00 a.m. They can sail through the territory without stopping.


Air Transport
All international passenger flights from and to Slovakia will be stopped when adopted by the Government of the Slovak Republic.

Post Offices
The Slovenská pošta (Slovak Post Office) operates in a limited regime and it adapts its opening hours as appropriate. The branches are regularly disinfected.
