Response of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic to attempts by some Russian media to falsify history after 1968

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic rejects repeated attempts by the Russian media to falsify historic events linked to the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops in 1968. On its portal, the TV station of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation “Zvezda“ published an article titled “Czechoslovakia should be grateful to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics for 1968: History of the Prague Spring”. What we consider to be even more serious is falsifying the history of Czechoslovakia’s occupation in the magazine “Na Bojevom Postu” that published a propaganda article written by Colonel Safronov and Lieutenant-Colonel Makojev. It is striking that already at the level of the official press body of the Russian Federal National Guard Service misleading information gets intentionally published. We strongly condemn all attempts to rewrite the past and distort the historic truth about this dark chapter of Slovak-Russian relations. The invasion by the Warsaw Pact troops of Czechoslovakia and the following military occupation were a flagrant violation of fundamental principles of international law, led to the deepening of the totalitarian regime’s violation of human rights, and caused suffering to a great number of people.
