Reaction to the Published Information regarding the Funding of CERN

23.10.2019 | Vyhlásenia a stanoviská ministerstva

In relation to the published information that the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic did not pay the 2019 contribution to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), as well as the reaction of the Education Ministry that the problem is not only theirs but also that of the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, we would like to make the following statement:

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic is the sponsor of the inter-ministerial program for paying the Slovak Republic’s contributions to international organizations; however, this program is decentralized. This means that the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry doesn’t  have  the resources itself, but rather they are budgeted in the general treasury management of the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic. The participants of this program are the individual central government bodies, and these are materially and financially responsible for meeting our international commitments. If the financial commitments of individual central government bodies are not covered, it is their responsibility to enter into negotiations with the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic in the context of the creation of the budget for the next period. Therefore, the full responsibility for the CERN contribution lies wholly with the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic has received no request from the Education Ministry for support in the talks with the Finance Ministry nor any indication that its financial commitments towards this organization are not covered.
