Today (6 February 2019), in Brussels, twenty-nine NATO member states, in the presence of the Macedonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Dimitrov, signed the NATO Accession Protocol for the future Republic of North Macedonia. The signing of the Protocol allows for Skopje to participate in meetings of the North-Atlantic Alliance as an “invited country” until its formal status as a member has been reached. The Slovak Republic, as a long-term supporter of the open-door policy, also contributed to the increase of stability and security in the Western Balkans region and is ready to initiate the process of national ratification. The citizens of this country will shortly become part of the transatlantic community, which encompasses a population of almost one billion people whose security has been reliably guaranteed by the Alliance for more than 70 years.
