Following up the so-far intensive working dialogue between the Slovak diplomacy department and Ukrainian partners and developing the discussion of relevant forms of assistance for transforming Ukraine was the objective of the visit by Igor Slobodník, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, to Kyiv on 14 and 15 May.

Energy and security sector reform were the key topics at the 1st Slovak-Ukrainian discussion forum which the State Secretary raised in Kyiv. “The event is symbolic in several ways but all these ways have one thing in common, namely Slovakia’s strong interest in the stabilization and success of Ukraine,” said Slobodník in his statement at the forum. He also underlined the ongoing effort by the Visegrad Group (V4) in sharing its experiences of reform processes with Ukraine, where Slovakia, as the V4 presiding country, will focus on topics such as energy and security sector reform. The bilateral discussion forum presents a platform for regular consultations on timely issues of Slovakia-Ukraine relations with wider participation of state administration bodies, experts, societal organizations and business circles of both countries.

State Secretary Slobodník included in his working program in Kyiv talks with Vadym Prystaiko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, to discuss the political situation in Ukraine, further activities of Slovakia and the V4 in transferring transformation experiences to Ukraine, including continuation of the series of thematic round tables and the Eastern Partnership as well as timely issues of Slovakia-Ukraine bilateral relations.

The meeting between State Secretary Slobodník and officials of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine was dedicated to an evaluation of the status of implementation of constitutional reform in Ukraine, the association agenda, assistance in the country’s reforms and opportunities for development of parliamentary cooperation between the Slovak Republic and Ukraine.

The working visit by State Secretary Slobodník took place shortly before the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit in Riga and this was his first trip abroad after he assumed the office of State Secretary of MFEA SR.
