The Spring Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic Alliance, held in Bratislava from 31 May to 3 June, continued on Sunday (2 June) with the talks of the Political Committee and Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security. The opening speech for the delegates of the Political Committee was given by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic František Ružička.

In his address the State Secretary recalled the irreplaceable role of NATO in guaranteeing security and stability for the Slovak Republic and Europe. The Slovak Republic’s 15 years of NATO membership clearly shows that there is no better or more efficient alternative for the security and defense of our country.

The advantages of Slovakia’s membership in NATO and the EU are beyond doubt, and it is necessary to actively communicate this to the public. In this regard Ružička stressed that the efforts the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has made in the dialogue with the citizens in the recent period has had a positive influence on the gradual increase in the public support of our membership in these organizations. This is also attested to by public opinion polls.

The need for a more comprehensive attitude of NATO in the context of communication was also highlighted by Ružička: “We have to change crisis communication to strategic communication, that is, to move from a disposition of reaction to one of prevention. And the best way is to focus on education of young people and developing critical thinking skills at schools.

During the interactive discussion in the Political Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly session in Bratislava, the partners highly appreciated the opportunity to exchange opinions with the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic on a wide spectrum of foreign policy issues. Ružička used this opportunity to evaluate the current developments in Ukraine, to explain the possibilities for a more active engagement of Slovakia in improving the security situation in Africa, and also to reflect on the current state of relations in the South Caucasus.
