State Secretary František Ružička received his Czech counterpart Lukáš Kaucký, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, at Slovakia’s Foreign and European Affairs Ministry today (4 March 2019). In the discussion they delved into current European topics, as well as regional and bilateral cooperation.  This year we will jointly commemorate 15 years of our membership in the European Union, by which we have confirmed our free decision to adopt democratic principles and adhere to European values.

“The advantages of the European Union such as peace, respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy and respect for human rights are not to be taken for granted. Therefore, we must actively stand up for them, protect them and more often explain them before the upcoming European elections,” emphasized State Secretary Ružička.

As for the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU, State Secretary Ružička and Deputy Minister Kaucký agreed that Brexit requires an adequate preparation of legislative and non-legislative measures at the national level. Slovakia and the Czech Republic are ready to adopt the necessary laws and procedures to alleviate as much as possible the negative impact of Brexit on our citizens and business. They also expressed their conviction that the United Kingdom would remain a strategic partner of the EU even after Brexit.

The regional cooperation of Slovakia and the Czech Republic is intensive especially within the Visegrad cooperation. The Czech Republic will take over the group’s Presidency from Slovakia this July. The possibilities for a closer cooperation are also open within the so-called Slavkov format, which includes not only Slovakia and the Czech Republic but also Austria.

During his visit to Bratislava, Deputy Minister Kaucký commemorated the 135th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Slovak jurist, politician and journalist, Dr. Ivan Dérer, and unveiled his memorial at the primary school named after him.
