During his working visit to the federal state of Steiermark in Austria, on 28-29 January 2020, State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry František Ružička held negotiations with Werner Kogler, Vice-Chancellor and Minister for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport of the Republic of Austria.

In addition to an assessment of the existing cooperation between Slovakia and Steiermark, the talks were geared towards the opportunities presented by the political and geographical vicinity, the common traits of industry, and the rise of new technologies.

As Steiermark is one of the leading regions of Europe for science, research and innovation, the State Secretary stated: “The Slovak Republic sees a potential for a future cooperation between Slovakia and Steiermark in research and development.  For instance, we could achieve a lot in the areas, such as the involvement of our students in research projects realized in the Green Tech Cluster Steiermark, or the engagement of Slovak companies in the process of translating research results in the production of new products.

The partners also delved into European topics, focusing on current issues such as the Conference on the Future of the European Union and climate protection.

“Also in these areas Slovakia and Austria share close views. Although we do not have entirely the same opinion on the procedure, it is important that we strive for the same objective.  Both countries adhere to carbon neutrality. This serves as an apt opportunity that Slovakia and Austria can establish a mutual cooperation in the development of green technologies, such as the Green Tech Cluster Steiermark,” said State Secretary Ružička.

During the visit, the State Secretary also met with the Honorary Consul for Steiermark, Professor Friedrich Wolfgang Sperl, as well as the Minister for Economy, Tourism and Research of Steiermark Barbara Eibinger Miedl, with whom he discussed primarily the development of economic relations between the two countries.
