František Ružička, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, received Yuri Mushka, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Slovak Republic on 27 November 2018. During their talks, they assessed the incident in the Kerch Strait and its political and security implications. The ambassador presented the position of Ukraine and informed about the violation of his country’s rights to sail freely in the Azov Sea and the Kerch Strait, which represents a  violation of the Russian-Ukrainian treaty on cooperation and the use of these waters of 2003. He stated that in reaction to the open clash of the Russian and Ukrainian military vessels, martial law has been declared in ten administrative regions of Ukraine, which will last for 30 days.  State Secretary Ružička confirmed his support for independence and the territorial integrity of Ukraine and stressed the interest of Slovakia in security, stability and prosperity of our neighbor.  He emphasized that "the Slovak Republic calls for the use of prudence to avoid any further escalation in tensions in the region. Slovakia supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and condemns the illegal annexation of Crimea.  We call for a de-escalation of tensions and the use of all possible channels of communication. In the context of Slovakia’s Chairmanship in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, our concern is to normalize the situation and search for diplomatic solutions that contribute to the peaceful settlement of the existing disputes."
