Today (13 April), Ivan Korčok, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, delivered a speech at a meeting of the Slovak defence and security community titled “Together About Defence and Security”, which took place in Beladice. In his speech Korčok spoke about Slovakia’s position on the global security map, about the challenges the country is facing from all cardinal directions, about the opportunities and how they can be used to defend Slovakia’s interests. He presented his assessment of the global developments in political affairs, characterized by uncertainty and opacity. He emphasized the fact that the EU, and therefore also the Slovak Republic, can be secure only if reforms and integration processes are completed in the Western Balkans and when the conflicts on the eastern and southern borders of the EU are resolved. In terms of EU security, Africa – which is often on the periphery of our interest – is a key region. Rapid demographic growth, social and economic problems and climate changes are directly related to migration tensions. However, Mr. Korčok also said that the West must address some internal challenges itself. For example, the constant threat of terrorist attacks, population aging and a gradual shift of the centres of economic production eastward. In this context, the State Secretary asserted that the security environment worldwide has recently gotten worse and that Slovakia is not immune from these changes. “The greatest challenge today is to realize the extent and consequences of this essential change in the security environment that the Slovak Republic is not only witnessing but is in the middle of. It is, however, only up to us how we can turn the challenges into opportunities. The modernization of the Slovak Armed Forces that has already begun, for example, is a good opportunity to transform our political affiliation to operational readiness,” stated Korčok.

The main organizer of the event was the Slovak Security Policy Institute. It was the third meeting of the Slovak defence and security community, attended by 73 defence and security experts.
