State Secretary Korčok on challenges facing the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU

26.4.2016 | Aktivity štátnych tajomníkov | Národný konvent o Európskej únii | Predsedníctvo SR v Rade EÚ

State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry and Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Slovak Republic for Presidency in the Council of the European Union Ivan Korčok attended the National Convent on the European Union workshop at the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica today (26 April).

The workshop focused on the challenges facing the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU. During the discussion, Korčok outlined the international political context of the Presidency, which will be marked by the ongoing conflicts in the immediate neighborhood of the Union or developments vis-à-vis the migration crisis, as well as the Brexit referendum of the United Kingdom.

As for the barometer of success, he pointed to the capability of the presiding country to achieve progress in the legislative process and efficiently communicate with other EU institutions – especially the European Commission and the European Parliament. “For a successful Presidency, it’s necessary to understand that for half of the year during which you hold the Presidency, you become the representative of all the 28 member states in the Council and your task is to achieve consensus in their opinions. Only consensus will enable the Council to make progress in discussing individual legislative proposals,” explained Korčok.

The main domestic ambition is to build common ownership of the Slovak Presidency across the public. This idea is also aided by the National Convent on the EU, the events also being held in regions this year.

“The historically first ever Presidency of the Council of the EU will represent great prestige, as well as a unique opportunity for Slovakia. I’m convinced that we will benefit from the expertise and insight we will gain during the Presidency in terms of the efficient promotion of the Slovak interests within the EU,” stated the State Secretary at the end of the meeting.
