Alternate Foreign Affairs Minister of the Hellenic Republic Miltiadis Varvitsiotis introduced the priorities of the Greek Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe during a video conference with State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Martin Klus, on Wednesday (24 June 2020). The Council of Europe is the oldest pan-European political organization.

In this regard State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Klus emphasized that “Slovakia wants to be an active member of the Council of Europe, especially in these complicated times. Due to this reason we appreciate the set of priorities of the Greek Chairmanship that flexibly react to the need for the protection and respect of human rights and public health during the current pandemic of the COVID-19 disease.”

The Greek partner Varvitsiotis also invited the Diplomacy Ministry’s leadership of the Slovak Republic to the top session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which is to be held in Athens on 4 November 2020. The event will also be held on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights, which is the most important international human rights treaty on the European continent.

During the talks the partners also delved into questions concerning relations with Turkey and migration issues. They agreed that the “activities of Turkey in the Mediterranean Sea and the events from the beginning of this year related to the flow of refugees do not contribute to the positive developments in the region, quite the contrary. Therefore, it is important that the European Union express solidarity and send a unified signal.”
