The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic deeply appreciates and welcomes the agreement between Athens and Skopje regarding the long-standing dispute about the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The agreement achieved at the level of prime ministers of the two countries is the result of the years-long efforts of representatives of both countries as well as those of the international community, especially the UN, which relentlessly and in good faith strived to find a sustainable compromise solution.

The agreement is not only a significant step towards the definitive termination of the bilateral dispute but it also represents an important signal for the region and other areas of the world that it is possible to solve in peace even complicated issues with a historic burden through an agreement if there is a real interest and will by both partners. We believe that the agreement will be ratified as soon as possible and entered into in compliance with legal regulations by both countries, to be put into practice.  We expect that the agreement will help improve regional cooperation in the Western Balkans and enable Macedonia to progress in its NATO and EU approximation process.
