Statement of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic on the Escalation of the Situation in the Kerch Strait

26.11.2018 | Vyhlásenia a stanoviská ministerstva

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic is closely following the developments in the Azov Sea and Kerch Strait; the increasing tensions raise our serious concerns. We call upon both sides to use prudence to avoid any further escalation in tensions.

The Slovak Republic does not recognize the annexation of Crimea and fully supports the sovereignty of Ukraine and its territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders. Therefore, we call upon the Russian Federation to allow free access through the Kerch Strait and to the Ukrainian ports in the Azov Sea coast pursuant to international law.

The steps leading to the escalation of tensions in the annexed Crimea, the Azov and Black Seas violate the sovereignty of Ukraine and undermine security and stability in the wider region.

The Slovak Republic takes over the Chairmanship in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in January 2019 and regards seriously the conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Our concern is to calm the situation and search for political solutions that contribute to the peaceful settlement of the existing disputes. In this context the situation in Ukraine will be one of the priorities of our OSCE Chairmanship.
